Just not as big a break as some had hoped: Bush commutes Libby prison sentence, similar to a Pardon since he doesn’t have to deal with the jail time, the conviction and $250,000 fine stays on his record. Commutes are rarely granted. Here is some more info from wikipedia:
Commutation of sentence involves the reduction of legal penalties, especially of terms of imprisonment. Commutation is normally linked to prisoners‘ good behavior. In the United States, reduction of sentence is handled by an executive head of government; In federal cases this is the U.S. Department of Justice. State sentences are usually handled by the governor’s office. Unlike a pardon a commutation does not nullify the conviction and is often conditional. A commutation may be submitted on a prisoner by the President of the United States.
