Los Angeles (dpa) - Socialite Paris Hilton was freed from jail early Thursday morning, just three days after she began serving a 45-day sentence for violating probation, officials said Thursday.

“After extensive consultations with medical personnel it was determined that Paris Hilton will be reassigned to our community-based … electronic monitoring programme,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore. “She has been fitted with an ankle bracelet and will be confined to her home for the next 40 days.”

The gossip column favourite and star of The Simple Life reality TV was originally sentenced to a 45-day-jail term for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

The sentence was reduced to 23 days for good behaviour. Whitmore said that due to her “reassignment” the sentence reverted to 45 days with Hilton being credited for the 5 days she spent behind bars.

Although she only spent three full days in jail, she was credited with five because she reported for sentencing right before midnight on Sunday and was released right after midnight Wednesday, in the wee morning hours of Thursday, officials said.

Dear Paris Hilton,

I am happy to welcome you into the ranks of the truly elite. The rule of law no longer applies to you because you are part of an elite class of American citizens that can buy love, power, friends, fame, and be entirely unaccountable for your deeds.

Paris Hilton, you have powerful friends at your side and powerful allies in the justice system. These friends will make the lives of those responsible for your arrest– detainment, and enforcement of our United States laws– a living hell. Heaven forbid that you sit out a jail sentence that applies to everyone –BUT YOU– for a parole violation and drunken driving.

You could have killed, no– MURDERED someone the night you drove home in a drunken stupor, it could have been my sister. It could have been my best friends mother. It could have been just about any American and the only way you would have been accountable for your actions is if you wronged another member of the elite class.
