Pharmaceuticals Ignore Cheap Cancer Killing Drugs

The sad thing is that nothing surprises me anymore.  When I read a story about the development of cheap and safe drugs that have the ability to destroy most types of cancers, I’m reminded of some of the experiences I’ve encountered throughout my life.  I think about my bald aunt sitting on her death bed, the first death I witnessed as a child.  She had no hope of cures or miracles, although she prayed with the rest of us in hopes that her death would not include pain and suffering.  I’m also reminded of numerous friends who struggled to come to grips with the reality of cancer in the family, striking parents, cousins and siblings.

So when I read that a cheap drug has been developed that can kill most types of cancers and is safe, it is discouraging but not surprising to see pharmaceuticals look the other way.  If the drug can’t make record profits for these corporations, why would they bother investigating cheap alternatives?  It’s a low point in American history, but given the direction of American ideology that has been spiraling south since Republicans and their beloved corporations took over government, this reality is expected.  It’ll only continue in the same direction as long as the corporate fascists remain in control of government and have seeds planted all throughout the legal system.
