Crucifixion: Our Dying Constitution

Published by Fred Soto• February 12th, 2008 RSS News Feed

the American spirit is dead thanks to disgraceful congressional leadership

I can fairly say now, that I’ve never been more ashamed to be an American.  In addition to being subject to the leadership of the worst presidential administration in American history, the Senate just voted to grant immunity to telecommunications companies that were complicit in illegal surveillance activity against Americans.  Of course, because this criminal activity occurred over the tenure of the Bush Administration, Congress will gladly give them a pass because they were acting based on a sense of “patriotic duty”.

In his closing speech on the Senate floor, Chris Dodd brought up September 28, 2007, what he calls the darkest day in the Congressional chamber.  If the date doesn’t ring a bell, it was the day that the not-so-honorable Senators voted to deny Habeas Corpus and allow torture to take place at the hands of our agents.   Senator Dodd argued that today, February 12, 2008, is a close second, as the action taken today further serves to deny the constitutional safeguards that our founders  intended to protect our citizens.

What Chris Dodd’s entire argument revolved around was simply allowing lawsuits to go forward and be decided by the appropriate branch, the judiciary.  President Bush insisted that he would veto any FISA legislation that didn’t include telecommunications immunity for his top secret surveillance activity.  Instead, what the legislature is doing is denying Americans the right to know what is going on in our government.   Today, government secrecy emerged victorious.

America’s Shame and why I’m proud to be “un-American”

Americans no longer have an understanding of what it means to be free, we’ve become so accustomed to big brother’s hand that torture, spying without warrants, and engaging in illegal wars of aggression are to be expected.  Many of the candidates running for president campaigned hard on these issues, insisting that we would “remain on offense” in the propaganda-ridden war on terror.   What Americans need now is a miracle, we need a hero or group of heroes to stand up in our legislature and fight for them.  We don’t need more government parenting and rules that cater to corporations and fear.

Terrorism should be a tool that only the enemy is allowed to use.  Illegal government activity should not be tolerated in its current form.  Soon, we will lose a part of ourselves, the American spirit will die.  This country is no longer FDR’s America, it isn’t JFK’s or Reagan’s America.   It most definitely is not Bill Clinton’s America, yet his wife was curiously absent from the Senate floor on this most important matter.   Unless our voters and elected officials stand up and fight for freedom, we’re going to lose this fight for our country.  If you feel even a modicum of pride and love left for this nation that people the world over once admired, equip yourself with knowledge and do your part so that our country won’t slip away into the dark abyss of fascism.

I’m afraid we’re already there, but there may be hope and that hope begins with you.

Your idiot legislators at work

  1. “illegal wars of aggression are to be expected”
I think this all actually started a little before 9/11, it’s not strictly a US phenomenon either - it’s world over. A lot of complacency has lead to where we are now, letting corporations, health/trade/world organizations and Governments dictate what is best for the people.

Fortunately, post-Iraq war has lead to what could be termed as the awakening of the public, most notably the American public. People are finally coming to terms with gross Government negligence and people are finally able to fulfil the role of the public (which is principally to govern and regulate the Government from corruption). The time is now to take back control of the respective governments, and to hold them responsible for any and all actions.

The biggest fight has yet to come, and it is one that will ultimately decide whether the public sphere dies, in place of the private sphere (an area where public discourse is made impossible, and dissemination of knowledge and information becomes a mere illusion). The final battle is over freedom itself.

  2. Abraham Lincoln stated, “I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of our country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed.”

    Happy Birthday Abe…

  5. Two words: Ron Paul

  6. If you hate it so much, leave.

  7. Why dont you do something productive like run for office, and really try to change things. Instead, you’re just whining like a baby, hoping someone else will make the change for you.

  8. Undertone

Are you really that naive? You consider speaking out against the things you feel are wrong to be doing nothing more than “whining like a baby”? This is the soap box of the new world. This man is on his soap box, telling the world how he feels and why. This alone is doing something productive by forcing people into thought. Weather you agree or disagree is your right to choose.

    Non
You are quite short sited. I might add that you seem to also be a coward. Any man/woman that answers their problems by running from them is nothing more than a coward. You should ‘grow a pair’!

  9. […] to Crucifixion.com, the U.S. congress has just passed a bill that grants immunity to telephone companies should they […]

  10. A shame Ron Paul won’t win the republican nomination. If there ever was a chance to get America facing in the right direction…it was with him.

  11. I was just wondering which party since 2006 has been in control of the house and senate?

  12. Let’s not forget, Ron Paul doesn’t need to have the Republican nomination to be President. If the people truly can make a difference, here’s the opportunity.

  13. Let’s not forget, Ron Paul doesn’t need to have the Republican nomination to be President. If the people truly can make a difference, here’s the opportunity.

  14. It’s not about parties. Most (if not all) government officials are corrupt and evil. Americans spoke out with an overwhelming majority when we voted the Democrats into congress but what have they done for us? Rolled over for Bush and let him continue to rape our constitution.

We need to stop fighting amongst ourselves as if these political parties were our college alma mater and start supporting a change to our government that will benefit the PEOPLE and not the CORPORATIONS and CORRUPT OFFICIALS.

We are not rivals. We are Americans. Let us all start acting like it.

  15. It seems like every time someone makes a comment about loosing our freedoms, either the ‘left’ or the ‘right’ start going into the finger pointing… again…

“Well look what the President did…”

“Whose been in charge since 2006?”

Can we please just for a change, and I’m begging here, just get down to the issue at hand instead of insults, snide remarks and general unpleasantness. I mean seriously folks, if I spent the kind of time and energy avoiding doing what I was hired to do instead of working, I would be out of a job.

So lets stop fighting and how about we get back to being the “Land of the Free and the home of the Brave”?

  16. Fine if dictator Bush doesn’t want to punish companies for working with the government in good faith then hold those in government who did not follow the constitution accountable. IMPEACH

  17. @K
I did leave! I left before this d*ckhead bush was even elected! I’ve been saying this for 20 years, its not a “War on [insert latest crybaby cause here],” its a WAR ON AMERICANS! I think that you can trace it back to, at least, the RICO statutes and it has only snowballed since.

So, on the now infamous 9/11, the locals asked:

“Your country is under attack! What do you think?!?”

    My reply:

    “They f*cking missed!!!”

    ’nuff said.

  18. Our government carried out 9/11.

  19. The problem is, Democrat or Republican, are two sides of the same coin. Neither side actually wants people to be free. This has been in the works for decades- It goes back to when George H.W. Bush was in the CIA.

I suggest everyone research, “Bilderberg Group”. It jut might open your eyes. The power-hungry elite want to stay that way, and will trample anything and anyone that gets in the way. With the homegrown terrorism act being passed, even expressing dissenting opinions can be classified as acts of terror, and you can be kidnapped and tortured in Guantanamo– held without a charge, denied legal representation, and worse, be ‘disappeared’. Orwell and Huxley laid out the foundation for where this country is headed. Hitler laid out his plan in Mein Kampf— the USA has become a Fascist state, and there is no turning back now…

  20. “Americans no longer have an understanding of what it means to be free, we’ve become so accustomed to big brother’s hand that torture, spying without warrants, and engaging in illegal wars of aggression are to be expected. I don’t think its enough — we have to figure something to do now, while we have time, before the reigns of the police state grip us into submission … here’s a good place to start: http://www.americanfreedomcampaign.org

pay attention at your Constitution ! ;)

  23. Fred Soto is a tool. Only in America could a mental moron get a worthless article like this air time.

He watches CNN, gets all pumped up on his own recitation of worthless liberal spin, and decides he knows enough to write an article while exposing the tool that he is.

  24. If you are ashamed to be an American, then why don’t you move to another country that will fit your expectations. That will leave more room in this country for those of us proud to be Americans.

  25. Your ashamed of being American…yet you have the freedom to write this article, buy anything you want, have reliable electricity and running water, and can go to sleep at night without having to worry about other country’s armed forced rading your home. Get out of my country.

  26. This is why I hate people like you, Proud. You remind the writer of the article that because of his country he has free speech, then when he uses it you say, ‘Well, I don’t agree with you, so get out of America’

What kind of backwoods retard logic is that? I’ll just bet there were assholes like you during the boston tea party just struggling to keep the tea in the boat. ‘Hey, guys, if you hate England so much, get out of the colonies!’ Yeah, fucker, let’s all stay at home and not affect the direction of our country. Anyone who wants change in America should obviously just go away. You are what is wrong with America.

A revolution is coming. We are approaching a watershed moment in America. When it comes we will all know it and the decision will be as simple as choosing to affect change or die in chains. Stay in your country Americans, in a matter of years those telling us to simply listen to those in office will either be cowering in their homes or dead in the streets. Change is coming.

  27. most other countries around the world are fine. nobody is raiding their houses, and they dont have to be in fear of being taken over, except by U.S! “If you dont like it, leave” is a bullshit statement and basically if you say that, the underlying argument is, “i really don’t know what is going on or am apathetic” and you really do NOT know about corporate + government scams and hacks. Also, the majortiy of people don’t care enough about these issues to be active, they are just working to pay the bills and get by and they really cant even take advantage of these freedoms that we should have. all the meanwhile the rich are just working on gaining power

  28. @N…

“If you hate it so much, leave.”

Don’t you know that the flight of people who care is a huge part of the problem?

For a microcosm that is close to you, consider the decay of our inner cities.

What this country desperately needs is people who both care and are willing to stick around to make a difference. Even a blogger’s role of sounding the alarm, which helps others to see just how far astray we’ve gone, is essential.

Saying, “Look, things are really messed up here, and I’m ashamed to be a part of it!” appeals to any latent sense of patriotism we still have, and motivates us to make the changes that really are required. All true Americans, except children or those with mental handicaps, should be profoundly outraged by how things have been going.

Kudos to Fred Soto, and his constructive post.

  29. I have been saying this for so long. I’m proud not to be an american.

  30. […] read more | digg story […]

  31. “If you hate it so much, leave.”

Tell you what. If you hate the Constitution and everything America stands for so much that you’re proud of the fact we’re moving towards a police state, why don’t YOU move? I hear in North Korea the government has unlimited power to tap your phones and torture you — you’d love it there — why not move to some totalitarian hell-hole and give us back our Constitutional freedoms?

  32. Well, I’m proud we can have this discussion openly without fear of government reprisal (which would happen if we lived in a TRULY fascist state). I’m not always proud of some of the things some of my fellow citizens do, but I firmly believe we live in the greatest nation on the face of the earth. I even respect my fellow citizens who hold political views diametrically opposed to mine, and would lay down my life to defend their right to express those views, as have many loyal American servicemen through the years.

  33. Your completely lost my friend. Completely. Do not blame the government, blame yourselves.

  34. Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right Left, Right, Left, Right.

  35. The government no longer works for the people. It is controlled by a small group of power hungry people. How can you explain the action of our government to pass this kind of bill where government is protecting big corporations and ignorning protection of the people. I mean don’t we have the 4th admendment?

How can you explain that guy like Mccain who wants to give immunity to illegal can now represent the Republican leadership? I thought so many American’s were against the immigration bill but now we have presidential canidates from both parties supporting it?

It just doesn’t make sense? These people who are in power must be the smartest people on the face of this earth. How do they do this slight of hand magic trick to fool so many people?

I mean there are the minority that see through this but since this is a democratic election, they just have to fool most of the people and they’re doing an awesome job of it.

But one day people will wake up. Probably during a dark day in American history and I hope there will be enough people that knows the truth to stand up and fight for our freedom and our way of life.

But I’m afraid the powers to be probably is a step ahead of us and have a plan to control our military and enforce laws to stay in power. Remember they’re definitely smarter than we are. Probably several steps ahead of us in planning for the future.

  36. It never was your America. It never was about freedom and democracy. Illegal wars, “advisers”, coups, assassinations, illegal wiretaps of citizens, torture and so on, was always hip in the US. The Chimp and his band of brothers only made things apparent. You were never free. Only now they took away your illusions.

  37. Nikhil you said it right… “With the homegrown terrorism act being passed, even expressing dissenting opinions can be classified as acts of terror, and you can be kidnapped and tortured in Guantanamo– held without a charge, denied legal representation, and worse, be ‘disappeared’. Orwell and Huxley laid out the foundation for where this country is headed. Hitler laid out his plan in Mein Kampf— the USA has become a Fascist state, and there is no turning back now…”

People are not even aware or seem to care that our country is being taken away from them until thier families start being taken away for stepping on the wrong persons shoes… if drastic changes are not made soon then the plan of enslaving the population within the World economy (New World Order) and turning the Country into a playground for the rich will come to be.

Is this America? When I cannot pick up the phone and have a conversation with someone without worrying if “big brother” is litening… perhaps I would rather not have them here that I’m dying of some dreadful disease; that is my own private condition which I did not decide to share with anyone.

Is this America? When we torture P.O.W.’s. We even sentenced the Japanese for waterboarding during WW2.

Is this America? When some government official can come take me away (dissapear me) without anyone ever knowing where I am and having no right to a fair trial. What is this China (Tienamin Square).

Is this America? When our elected officials side with the Corporations (Telecom Immunity) time and time again instead of the people.

I am an American. I love America and I will never leave Her in her time of need which is now. This not the America I beleived and grew up in.

I am an American… but if things continue the way they are I’m afraid what we will be left with is something other than America.

Remember, we are all Americans and this is OUR COUNTRY!

  38. @Reason

I could not have said it better. I was about to reply, but you said it all!!
It is a shame people are not more educated to see how narrow minded they really are.
I have lived in many countries, and this is NOT a free country. Everything is censored and regulated.
In some states I can not even get a beer on Sundays!?!
Anyway, things need to change soon, we are already the laughing stock in every other country.

  40. American has no freedoms and will continue to lose more our govt is stripping us of our freedoms and this is not the way our founding fathers intended us to live.

we need to make a stand and fight for our rights which have been taken.

  41. I would also like to ask if this is America when private corporations (Blackwater) can have automatic weapons, attack hellicopters, grenades etc. While at the same time taking away our right to bare arms. This is scary stuff. I’ve even heard that the government would like to extend the authority of Blackwater to secure our borders IN AMERICA!

Remember: The right to bare arms was given to the people to protect them from the government not burglars.

    Pat Triot

  42. Notice people who say “Proud not to be an American” never divulge the country they live in?

  43. to those who use the argument “if you are ashamed of being american, leave”:

the fact of the matter is that if one is American, leaving the country won’t be enough to shed the shame off. In fact, you might find you are as ashamed abroad as you are within our borders. But that’s besides the point…

The real point is that Reason is right. Your logic (”backwoods retard logic,” as he so eloquently identifies), is ironically an example of something that is fundamentally the most un-American you could get, despite your inspired jingoism. In case you didn’t know, this nation was literally founded on the blood of rebellion–now I don’t want to give a history lesson here, but I honestly think people don’t know this when they say things like that. The founders gave government a big “FUCK YOU”, and when it came time to create their own gov’t, their still fervent distrust of it led them to make damned sure there were checks and balances in place. Yeah, checks and balances like the ones this congress and president are so carefully dismantling with legislation like this. And with that dismantling is the simultaneous erosion of our rights and the erection of tyranny like a giant Dick in the Washington sky, to which it is MY patriotic duty to do like our founders did, and metaphorically extend my middle finger in defiance.

  44. We agree. I’m ashamed that you’re an American, too.

  45. Thanks for the article Fred.
Gotta give props to commenter Reason.

  46. You mean YOUR patriotic ‘right’, not ‘duty’. Duty would indicate you “serve” America, but servitude is an option — unlike every other country where servitude is not an option.

Unfortunately, many people like Fred Soto are so spoiled by our rights, so bored with a fantastic quality of life, that they have nothing better to do than to attempt to stain whatever their worthless ass is sitting on.

  47. vote ron paul! Or write him in.

  48. How many more nails will it take to seal the coffin on the United States of America?

It all started with the first big boogeyman war, the War On Drugs.

The government openly declared war on it’s citizen’s and the Sheeple let it happen because they used a boogeyman, “drugs”.

Now they have the Terrorist boogeyman. They can point to daily examples of this boogeyman. Great war PR. They are using this war to steal the last of your freedoms and financial future.

The Sheeple will become the Slaves.

    Skunky

  49. I personally find it comforting that the government can peer through our documents, phone calls, and e-mails. I say this because no upstanding citizen who abides by the law should have to worry about the gov. going through their stuff. Unless you are guilty of some crime, why would you stop those who want to protect you, from being thorough with such crucial matters as national defense? Also, do you really think legislation can actually stop the executive branch from using its powers? The answer is this: They will tell you the Patriot Act has been repealed, but behind Langley doors, nothing changes. And personally I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  50. >> We don’t need more government parenting

    Are you serious?

Some candidates battling against what you claim is “government parenting” want to control every move we make. These candidates paint pretty pictures about freedom, then take HUGE amounts of money from taxpayers because they think they know how to spend our hard-earned money better than WE do.

They want to get inside corporate America and tell business how to operate in a FREE market. “Government parenting” — are you for real? That is exactly what certain candidates want to offer!

I don’t get it…. people belly-ache about Bush, Wars, etc. They complain about “big business.” When did it become a crime to operate under the economical rules of a FREE market? When did it become righteous to give Big Brother half of your income?

What makes you so incapable of responsible citizenship that you can’t even use your own money?

Great American spirit: Give the federal government billions upon billions of hard-earned income for the sake of freedom and let that government interfere with a free economy.

    Sheesh.

You people won’t be happy until we’re taxed to a socialist state and government can tell you how to be successful.

By the way, are you mad at Big Business? So much so that you think the government needs to get involved.

Then get your hands out of their bucket and STOP influencing their bottom line with YOUR money. Big Business works damn hard to be successful, and the FREE AMERICAN PEOPLE make them so-

  51. @Ken

Serious? I mean you can say that and be serious? The right to privacy was enacted so people cannot abuse their positions of power. Sure they can secretly subpoena your phone records and THEN go after you, but some due process is in there to protect you from people who do not want to ‘protect’ us or our country. Make them accountable and force them to follow the procedure instituted for good reasons, this whole ‘its for the good’ crap is just that.

    @tardlycookies

You do know that our country was founded by dissenters right? Freedom of speech means FREEDOM to say things bad about your government. I think the problem you are having is not reading what is being said and instead are looking at it as flat truth. I’m proud to be an American, but I’m very ashamed to call what we see happening American. The America I grew up in was about being brave, being proud, being just and right. This is not right, its Amnesty in another tongue for another group of people. Every single person who voted against the immigration act that now votes for this is a hypocrite plain and simple. Just cause you call an apple an orange does not make it an orange.

    @ALL “Ashamed so leave” people

Get off your high horse for two seconds and realize that when you say things like this you SPIT in the eye of one of the core principals this country was founded on, the freedom to disagree with your government and the way things are. Its the reason this country is still here and its the reason I am still proud to be an American. If cannot swallow the fact that maybe someone thinks the way we are going is the wrong way, then all you are doing is stomping on the thing you claim to love so much.

    Still Annoyed

  55. You may disagree if you so choose to. That is what makes this country great. There are certain measures that must be taken to ensure national security. Which guess what, means protecting you & yours. You don’t have to agree with it or like it. But there are terrorists living here at this moment, both foreign & home grown. You don’t feel like being eavesdropped on, don’t use the “hot button” words they scan for. As far as being ashamed of being an American, there are many flights a day to a country called France. Me, I’ll keep sticking my neck out in the special forces so the ignorant, the vacuous, and the just plain stupid can bad mouth the country I love & fight for…& fight for your right to act in such shameful manner.

we were objects of USA espionage and eavesdropping for ages.
now, we will be spied all together, welcome in club friends.

    peace, martin.

  63. You fools who keep saying to “leave America” obviously aren’t listening to the well developed arguments that the people who put thought into their comments are voicing. The only question is how do you stand up in a surveillance state like the one that has evolved in America?

I wish more people would give credit to articles like this. We may have a fantastic quality of life, but that’s only as long as this country is a hegemon in the world. Historically speaking, those only last 100-200 years. Considering our hegemony came to be around the end of World War I, I would say our time is ending. The Iraq war, our incredible debt, the abolishment of habeus corpus, Abu Grabe and Guantanimo Bay, and other factors are not helping our stance in the world. It is for that reason that most of our allies (excluding the British) do not support us in our “pre-emptive” war on Iraq.

I hate the idea of the “world economy” that we depend on (which is what gives us our FANTASTIC quality of life, cheap slave-like labor that produces the products we use every day). The only people that this system benefits are the rich elite. The middle class is being driven lower so eventually we will all really just be peons.

If you truly enjoy this quality of life you should be against not only ventures which drain the budget of this country, but legislation that protects the corporations and legislation that strips the rights of the people. I’m no expert, but it seems like some of you people need to read your Constitution. I love this country, and I hate to see it being destroyed.

Many of you people speak of standing up for your rights. I applaud this, but at the same time I hope you are really ready to make a stand when the time comes.

  64. Fred - Why is it that you point out that Sen. Clinton was noticeably absent from the vote, whereas there is no mention of Obama’s similar absence?

  65. So… You’ve got:
The Executive (president, fairly self evident motives).
The Senate (Love their positions more than the constitution).
The Congress (Holding the purse strings & thus a lot of power, but sadly can’t lift their heads out of the trough long enough to help the country).
The Judiciary who are waiting for retirement and praying not to get on the wrong side of Haliburton.
    And finally?
The Fifth estate (the media) the watchdogs and protectors of the citizenry? “Rupert Murdoch”, Need I say more???

It’s not Russia Or China that are the threats to America. It’s America.

    So…Egypt, Rome, Spain, England. . . America???

PS My Family left America after 200 years, 130 years ago. I still love what America stood for, and could stand for. Will this period rejuvenate or destroy America?

  66. @ConservativeGuilt: I originally linked to the Amendment that Chris Dodd was pushing that would have denied immunity to telecommunications companies.

    Dodd amendment

I later linked to the actual measure that would renew FISA.

Protect America Act ‘Permanent’ Renewal w/ immunity provision that Senate has betrayed our country with.

  67. Mr. Soto is an attorney and he knows that to have a legitimate complaint one needs standing.
