The European Space Agency (ESA) has recently taken a significant step towards the future of space exploration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Airbus and Voyager Space. The agreement, which was signed during the European Space Summit in Seville, Spain, aims to explore the potential use of the Starlab commercial space station as a successor to the International Space Station (ISS).
With the retirement of the ISS on the horizon, the companies involved in the MOU – Airbus, Voyager Space, and the ESA – will work together to determine how Starlab can be utilized to provide continued access to space for Europe. This includes conducting ESA astronaut missions and research on the space station.
In addition, the ESA could potentially provide cargo and crew transportation for Starlab, as it recently launched a commercial cargo initiative targeting the readiness of a new vehicle for missions by 2028. The current approach of bartering services among ISS partners is not expected to extend to commercial space stations, thus necessitating new contracts or partnerships.
The development of Starlab has already seen significant progress, thanks to a joint venture announced by Airbus and Voyager Space. Airbus, providing its technical and business development expertise, has been an integral part of this project. Furthermore, Voyager Space has also formed a partnership with Northrop Grumman, which will offer a version of its Cygnus cargo spacecraft capable of autonomously docking with Starlab.
This MOU signifies a major milestone towards shaping the future of space exploration. With the retirement of the ISS drawing closer, the potential use of Starlab as a successor could provide exciting opportunities for scientific research, as well as advancing European presence in space. The collaboration between Airbus, Voyager Space, and the ESA will undoubtedly pave the way for new achievements and breakthroughs in the field of space exploration.
