Title: Listeria Outbreak Linked to Peaches, Nectarines, and Plums: HMC Farms Recalls Products
In a recent development, a listeria outbreak has been traced back to whole peaches, nectarines, and plums. The spread of the outbreak has led to 10 hospitalizations and sadly, one death. As a precautionary measure, HMC Farms, a California-based company, has taken the initiative to voluntarily recall the affected fruits sold between May 1 and November 15, 2022, and between May 1 and November 15, 2023.
The recall does not include currently available peaches, plums, and nectarines in stores. However, consumers are advised to examine the fruit they have purchased during the specified periods. Symptoms of listeria infection include muscle aches, fever, tiredness, and can manifest within two weeks after consuming contaminated food.
Individuals who are pregnant, 65 years or older, or have a weakened immune system are particularly vulnerable to listeria infection. Therefore, they should exercise extra caution. It is crucial for consumers to immediately dispose of or return the affected fruit.
Furthermore, proper cleaning of refrigerators and surfaces that came into contact with the recalled fruit is highly recommended to eliminate any potential residual contamination.
The listeria outbreak has been reported in various states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio. Sadly, one pregnant woman has experienced preterm labor as a result of the infection.
HMC Farms is actively collaborating with the FDA to investigate the source of the contamination, working towards ensuring the safety of their consumers. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that the actual number of affected individuals could be higher than reported, and the outbreak may have potentially spread to other states.
Given the severity of the situation, it is essential for the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The FDA and CDC will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
