Pittsburgh Steelers Clinch Playoff Spot Despite Injury to T.J. Watt
The Pittsburgh Steelers have secured a spot in the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, thanks to their recent 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Additionally, a loss by the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 18 solidified their entry into the postseason. However, the team will have to face the playoffs without one of their key players, T.J. Watt.
Watt, who suffered a knee injury during a game on Saturday, has officially been ruled out for at least one playoff game. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Watt has a Grade 2 MCL sprain, which means he will be sidelined for their wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills. Initially, there were concerns that Watt had a more severe injury, such as a Grade 3 MCL sprain or a torn MCL. However, an MRI revealed a Grade 2 sprain, which is considered a “best-case scenario.”
Although Watt’s absence will surely be felt on the field, there is hope that he might return to the team if the Steelers advance further in the playoffs. Watt had to leave the Week 18 game in the third quarter after colliding with a teammate. Immediately, he went into the blue tent for evaluation before heading to the locker room.
Despite the setback, Watt had an impressive season, finishing as the NFL sacks leader with 19. He not only became the first player in NFL history to lead the league in sacks three times but also joined the ranks of just four players who have achieved 19 or more sacks in two separate seasons.
Watt’s injury has garnered attention from across the NFL community, with his brother, JJ Watt, also an NFL player, expressing concern on social media.
Looking ahead, the Steelers now face a tough challenge as they take on the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card game. The matchup is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised on CBS. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how the team performs in Watt’s absence and if they can overcome this hurdle to advance further in the playoffs.
