Yanira Alvarez Wins $1.08 Billion Powerball Jackpot in California
Yanira Alvarez has made headlines as the latest winner of the $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot in California. The lucky ticket was purchased at Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles, marking an end to a 39-draw jackpot run without a winner for Powerball.
Alvarez chose to receive the cash value of the prize upfront, which amounts to $558.1 million before taxes. This win comes on the heels of another billion-dollar winning ticket sold in California, making it the first time in Powerball history that back-to-back billion-dollar prizes were won in the state.
The California Lottery stated that the winnings will provide supplemental funding for public schools in the state. California Lottery director Harjinder K Shergill Chima expressed gratitude to players for their support in raising funds for education.
This win follows another historic jackpot won by Edwin Castro in California in 2022, where he took home the world’s largest ever lottery prize of $2.04 billion. Powerball’s next drawing is estimated at $935 million, making it the largest prize in the lottery so far this year.
With odds of winning the Powerball jackpot at 1 in 292.2 million, the excitement continues to grow as tickets are sold in 45 states and other locations. In addition, a lucky individual in New Jersey recently won a $1.13 billion Mega Millions jackpot, adding to the record-breaking wins in the world of lotteries.
