Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter has been permanently banned from the NBA for violating the league’s gambling rules. The NBA’s investigation revealed that Porter had bet on games, shared confidential information with other gamblers, and altered his participation in certain games to sway the outcomes of bets.
The ban was imposed after Porter’s suspiciously brief appearance in a game against the Sacramento Kings on March 20th, where he played for only three minutes. Prior to the game, Porter had disclosed his health status to a known NBA bettor, who placed an $80,000 bet on him underperforming.
The NBA was alerted to Porter’s actions by sports betting operators and a gambling market organization, who noticed unusual betting patterns surrounding the player. It was discovered that Porter had bet on at least 13 NBA games using an associate’s account, resulting in a total payout of $76,059.
Further investigation revealed that Porter had been an active VIP member on FanDuel, where he had wagered millions of dollars between 2021 and 2023 while playing in the NBA G League. The discovery of his extensive gambling history led to the NBA’s decision to permanently ban him from the league.
The NBA has a strict policy against gambling by players, coaches, and referees to uphold the integrity of the game. Porter’s actions have not only tarnished his own reputation but have also raised concerns about the potential for insider information to be used for gambling purposes in professional sports.
