Five military horses from the Household Cavalry caused chaos in central London during rush hour after being spooked by noise from a building site near Buckingham Palace. The horses bolted during routine exercises, throwing off four riders and running through main roads, hitting vehicles and stunning commuters.
The commotion erupted when the horses became alarmed by the sound of concrete falling off a moving walkway at a construction site in Belgravia. Three of the soldiers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while the extent of the horses’ injuries is not yet known.
Witnesses saw the horses crashing into vehicles and causing damage as they galloped through the busy streets. Pictures and videos of the incident went viral on social media, capturing the chaotic scene.
The Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment stated that incidents like this are extremely rare and thanked emergency responders and the public for their swift reaction. The London Ambulance Service treated four people following the incident, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. during the morning rush hour.
The horses were eventually captured and taken back to Hyde Park, their home base. The Household Cavalry is the ceremonial guard of the monarch, adding significance to this unusual event in the heart of London’s bustling streets.
