St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras sidelined with fractured forearm
St. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras has been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a fractured left forearm during a game against the Mets. The injury occurred when a direct hit from a J.D. Martinez swing left Contreras with a fractured forearm.
Contreras is scheduled to undergo surgery and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks, aiming for a return around the All-Star Break. The catcher has been a standout performer for the Cardinals this season, boasting an impressive .280/.398/.551 batting line with the best wRC+ among catchers with 100+ plate appearances.
In Contreras’ absence, young catcher Iván Herrera will take over as the primary catcher, with Pedro Pages serving as the backup. Pages is set to be recalled from Triple-A to join the Major League roster in support of Herrera.
Contreras, who is in the second season of a five-year free agent deal with the Cardinals, has been a productive hitter with a career batting line of .266/.366/.481 as a Cardinal. The team will surely miss his offensive contributions as they look to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
Stay tuned for updates on Contreras’ recovery and the Cardinals’ adjustment to his absence as they navigate the remainder of the season without their star catcher.
