American Caver Trapped 1,000 Meters Underground in Southern Turkey
Mark Dickey, an American caver, has found himself in a perilous situation after becoming trapped deep inside the Morca cave in the Taurus mountains of southern Turkey. Dickey fell ill with gastrointestinal bleeding while exploring the cave, leaving him stranded 1,000 meters below the surface.
Amidst the urgency to rescue Dickey, more than 150 rescuers, including teams from Croatia and Italy, have deployed to the scene. The rescue operation has been meticulously planned and is divided into seven sections. However, the estimated length of the operation, which is expected to take around 10 days, may change depending on Dickey’s condition.
In a glimmer of hope, the latest reports indicate that Dickey’s condition has improved. He has regained enough strength to stand on his own, albeit cautiously. To maintain communication with Dickey, a phone line has been established at a depth of 1,040 meters. Additionally, a CaveLink communications system is being set up as a backup.
While the focus remains on rescuing Dickey, an assessment by medics will determine if he can be safely brought out of the cave without the need for a stretcher. Images from the rescue operation show the setting up of tents and cables outside the sinkhole, which happens to be Turkey’s third-largest, at an altitude of 2,140 meters.
Authorities are closely monitoring the progress of the ongoing rescue operation, fully aware of the challenges posed by the treacherous cave terrain. Moreover, the National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC) in the United States is working in close coordination with Turkish authorities to provide their expertise and support in the rescue.
