The 96th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, were a night to remember as the biopic “Oppenheimer” took home the coveted prize for best picture. Directed by Christopher Nolan, “Oppenheimer” also cleaned up in other categories, with Nolan winning best director and actor Cillian Murphy taking home the award for best actor.
Emma Stone also had a big win, scoring best actress for her role in “Poor Things.” The Oscars didn’t shy away from highlighting geopolitics, as “20 Days in Mariupol” and “The Zone of Interest” both received awards. Russian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov won best documentary for “20 Days in Mariupol.”
Yorgos Lanthimos’ film “Poor Things” won three technical awards, while the night’s first award went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for best supporting actress. Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” was named best animated feature, and “Anatomy of a Fall” took home the prize for best original screenplay.
Despite limited presence at the Oscars, Netflix still had a win with Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” winning for best live action short. The success of “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” highlighted the importance of big-budget studio films at the Oscars.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars unfolded against the backdrop of Hollywood labor negotiations. The event was a star-studded affair that celebrated the best in film while also showcasing important issues and geopolitical themes in the entertainment industry.
