Tragedy Strikes as 9-Year-Old Boy with Autism Found Dead After Disappearing from Red Hook Ikea
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 9-year-old boy with autism who went missing from an Ikea in Red Hook, Brooklyn was found dead by the shoreline shortly after midnight on Thursday. Hasebul Nehan, who was nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, was reported missing on Wednesday around 9 p.m.
The boy’s mother, Abida Sultan, expressed her despair over the disappearance and pleaded with authorities to review surveillance footage for any clues about her son’s whereabouts. Heart-wrenchingly, the video footage revealed Nehan leaving the store and heading towards the Erie Basin.
Upon learning of Nehan’s disappearance, a large-scale emergency response was immediately launched. The efforts involved the collaborative work of the NYPD, FDNY, and various search and rescue units. Drones, boats, divers, and a K-9 unit were all employed in the extensive search for the missing boy.
Tragically, just three hours later, authorities located Nehan’s lifeless body. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sultan shared that her son had a particular fascination with bodies of water and had a tendency to wander off; however, they had always managed to find him before. This time, unfortunately, they were unable to locate him in time.
Heartbreakingly, the family had planned to take Nehan to see the water after their shopping trip, as he had disclosed his fondness for rivers and oceans. They never could have imagined that their outing would end in such unimaginable loss.
Law enforcement officials do not suspect any foul play and believe that Nehan’s death was a tragic accident. Their investigation into the incident continues, but they do not anticipate filing criminal charges at this time.
