Dutch Authorities Detain Greta Thunberg and Climate Protesters for Blocking Motorway
In a bold move to demand an end to Dutch fossil fuel subsidies, Greta Thunberg and other climate activists from Extinction Rebellion were detained by Dutch authorities for blocking a motorway in The Hague. Thunberg was detained twice on Saturday, first by local police and then again after rejoining a group of protesters.
The protesters, including Thunberg, were among the more than 400 people arrested throughout the day for ignoring police orders to disperse. Thunberg, known for her passionate activism on climate change, emphasized the importance of protesting in the face of a planetary emergency.
Extinction Rebellion has vowed to continue protests until the Dutch government stops subsidizing the oil and gas industry. The protest was strategically planned ahead of a debate on fossil fuel subsidies scheduled for June, in an effort to pressure the government to take action.
Thunberg, who gained fame in 2018 for her weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament, has been actively involved in various protests and civil disobedience actions for climate activism. Despite facing detention and backlash, Thunberg remains committed to advocating for climate action and holding governments accountable for their contributions to the climate crisis. White Houser will continue to cover Thunberg’s activism and the global movement for climate justice.
