France to Send Armoured Vehicles to Enhance Lebanese Army’s Patrol Missions
In a move aimed at strengthening the Lebanese national army, France has announced that it will send dozens of armoured vehicles to support their patrol missions. The decision comes as tensions escalate between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon.
French Defence Minister, Sebastien Lecornu, emphasized the importance of boosting the capabilities of the Lebanese army to effectively coordinate with the United Nations peacekeeping force. The provision of armoured vehicles is seen as essential in maintaining patrols and ensuring the safety of troops in the volatile region.
France’s support for the Lebanese army is not just a response to the current difficulties but a long-term commitment. Leveraging its historical relationship with Lebanon, France has been using diplomatic channels to mediate tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. However, the recent increase in violence has heightened concerns.
Aside from the armoured vehicles, France has also pledged to supply medicines and establish a joint program to purchase medical supplies for the Lebanese army. This aid package demonstrates France’s commitment to assist Lebanon in multiple ways, encompassing both military and humanitarian support.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which includes 700 French soldiers, was established in 1978 following border violence between Israel and Lebanon. Its mission is to supervise the withdrawal of Israeli forces and help Lebanon restore its sovereignty. However, the rising power of Hezbollah, classified as a terrorist organization by the US and other countries, has complicated the security situation.
Lebanon’s struggling economy and dysfunctional state have raised concerns about the potential for a major conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. Both sides have engaged in sporadic hostilities, heightening regional tensions. France’s assistance aims to strengthen the Lebanese army’s capacity to maintain peace and stability in the midst of these challenges.
France’s commitment to Lebanon goes beyond the immediate tensions and highlights its dedication to supporting the country’s long-term security and well-being. By providing armoured vehicles and medical aid, France hopes to augment the Lebanese army’s ability to address internal security concerns and collaborate with international peacekeeping efforts effectively.
As the situation in southern Lebanon remains precarious, the international community continues to closely monitor developments, hoping that strengthened support for the Lebanese army will contribute to stability in the region and prevent further escalation of violence.
