In a recent devastating attack, Russia has destroyed the largest power-generating plant in Ukraine’s Kyiv region, the Trypilska TPP, in a missile strike. The attack involved a total of 82 missiles and drones, including six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. Despite this aggressive move, Ukraine’s Air Force managed to shoot down 18 incoming missiles and 39 drones, preventing any casualties and avoiding power cuts in Kyiv and surrounding areas.
The Trypilska TPP was a major supplier of electricity to Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Zhytomyr regions, and its destruction has left a significant impact on the region’s power supply. Centrenergo, Ukraine’s energy company, lost 100% of its power generation across three plants due to the attack. Additionally, DTEK, Ukraine’s largest power company, suffered serious damage from Russian missile and drone attacks on two power stations.
This attack is part of Russia’s ongoing targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure over the course of the two-year war. Despite the destruction, the Chairman of Centrenergo’s Supervisory Board remains confident in Ukraine’s ability to recover and rebuild. President Zelensky has criticized the West for not providing enough air defenses to Ukraine to prevent such attacks.
It is worth noting that Ukraine has faced significant power losses in the past, including the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant by Russian forces. The latest attack on the Trypilska TPP serves as a harsh reminder of the ongoing conflict and the impact it has on the country’s critical infrastructure.
