Netflix is gearing up to release a new film that delves into the scandalous interview Prince Andrew did with journalist Emily Maitlis back in 2019. Titled “Scoop,” the movie stars Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew and Gillian Anderson as Maitlis, and is scheduled to premiere on April 5.
Sewell, who plays the embattled royal, admitted to feeling the pressure of embodying such a controversial figure and even had some regrets initially. The film aims to present a balanced portrayal of Prince Andrew, showcasing both his good and bad sides.
The interview in question was conducted in an attempt to uncover the extent of Prince Andrew’s relationship with the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein, who died by suicide while awaiting trial on child sex-trafficking charges in 2019, had a long-standing friendship with the prince.
Following Epstein’s death, one of his accusers, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, sued Prince Andrew and reportedly reached a settlement of $12 million in 2022. Despite being stripped of his military and royal titles, Prince Andrew continues to maintain his innocence.
In addition to “Scoop,” an Amazon television series titled “A Very Royal Scandal” was announced in November 2023, with Michael Sheen portraying Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Maitlis. The series will further explore the fallout from the interview and the wider scandal surrounding Prince Andrew’s association with Epstein.
Stay tuned for the release of “Scoop” on Netflix to witness the dramatization of a real-life royal scandal that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
