Experts are warning that the world’s next pandemic may be caused by a mysterious and deadly virus known as Disease X, with influenza emerging as a possible threat. According to a recent international survey, 57% of senior disease experts believe that a strain of influenza virus is the most likely cause of the next global outbreak.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also raised concerns about the devastating consequences of the seasonal flu, which affects millions of people and claims hundreds of thousands of lives annually. Research from Cologne University further supports these concerns, pointing out that influenza’s continual evolution and mutation properties make it a significant threat for the upcoming worldwide pandemic.
These alarming findings will be announced at the upcoming ESCMID congress, where experts will discuss the potential risks posed by Disease X and the influenza virus. The WHO has specifically highlighted the spread of the H5N1 strain of influenza in parts of the US, calling it “100 times worse than Covid” if it mutates and maintains a high case fatality rate.
Since 2003, the H5N1 virus has had a fatality rate exceeding 50%, much higher than the current fatality rate of COVID-19. With these growing concerns and warnings from experts and health organizations, it is crucial for the global community to remain vigilant and prepared for the potential threat of a future influenza pandemic.
