White House Attorneys Requested Edits to Robert Hur’s Report on Biden’s Memory Lapses
White House attorneys recently made a controversial move, asking former special counsel Robert Hur to make changes to his descriptions of President Biden’s memory lapses before the release of his report. Hur confirmed during his testimony that White House Counsel Richard Sauber and Biden’s personal lawyer Bob Bauer requested edits to the report, specifically asking him to revisit and revise descriptions of Biden’s memory within his expertise and remit.
Hur’s report, which defended Biden’s decision not to bring charges for retention of classified material, was released by Attorney General Merrick Garland just three days later. Despite this, House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin commended Biden for not seeking to redact any part of Hur’s report, despite pressure from his lawyers.
Criticism arose when Biden objected to Hur’s characterization of his mental faculties, even going as far as calling him a “Republican counsel” despite his confirmation by Democratic senators. Hur defended the inclusion of Biden’s memory lapses in the report, stating it was necessary to “show my work” and explain his decision not to recommend criminal charges.
The White House Counsel’s Office declined to comment on the matter when requested. The controversy surrounding the edits to Hur’s report on Biden’s memory lapses continues to spark debate and speculation among political observers.
