Severe Flooding in Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve Prompts Evacuations
Heavy rains have been wreaking havoc in Kenya, with the Maasai Mara national reserve bearing the brunt of the devastation. The relentless downpour has caused the river in Maasai Mara to break its banks, leading to extensive flooding across the reserve.
Tourist accommodation facilities in Maasai Mara have been submerged, forcing the evacuation of scores of tourists who had come to witness the region’s renowned wildlife. The Kenya Red Cross and the Narok county government have been actively involved in rescuing over 90 people from the flooded areas.
This tragic event is part of a larger crisis gripping the country, with over 170 people losing their lives due to flooding and landslides since mid-March. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of more rain in the upcoming week, further exacerbating the situation.
In Nairobi, three main roads have been temporarily closed due to flooding, affecting the daily commute of many residents. The Kenya Red Cross also conducted a rescue operation in Kitengela, Nairobi, saving 11 people from flooded homes.
Tragically, a river in the Mai Mahiu area broke through a clogged tunnel, resulting in 48 deaths and over 80 individuals reported missing. President William Ruto has ordered the military to join the search and rescue operations in Mai Mahiu to assist in locating the missing persons.
As water levels in hydroelectric dams reach historic highs, the government is urging people in flood-prone areas to evacuate to safer locations. The situation remains dire, and the authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected by the flooding.
