Title: “Thousands of Unknowingly Infected Cheap Android TV Devices Found Across the US”
In recent research conducted by cybersecurity firm Human Security, it has been revealed that thousands of cheap Android TV devices are unwittingly infected with malware. This discovery was initially made by security researcher Daniel Milisic, and it has since been confirmed by other experts in the field.
Specifically, the malware was found on the T95 Android TV streaming box, but Human Security researchers have also identified seven other Android TV boxes and one tablet with similar backdoors installed. More alarmingly, signs of potential infection have been detected on approximately 200 different Android device models, highlighting the vast scope of this issue.
These infected devices are not confined to one particular sector; instead, they have been found in homes, businesses, and even schools across the United States. It is believed that these cheap Android streaming boxes, costing less than $50, are often sold under various names and are largely unbranded, making it difficult to trace their source.
Human Security, upon discovering the interconnected web of fraud schemes associated with these infected devices, took immediate action to dismantle advertising fraud linked to the scheme. Furthermore, they have shared crucial details regarding the manufacture of these devices with law enforcement agencies.
Human Security’s research has primarily focused on two areas: “Badbox,” involving the compromised Android devices, and “Peachpit,” a related ad fraud operation. A particular Android app connected to inauthentic traffic and the flyermobi.com domain has raised suspicions, prompting further investigation.
In light of these findings, it has been confirmed that at least 74,000 Android devices worldwide, including some within US schools, show signs of a Badbox infection. The potential implications of this malware are far-reaching, particularly due to its presence in educational institutions where sensitive data may be compromised.
As this issue continues to gain attention, it is crucial for individuals and organizations to remain vigilant regarding the security of their Android TV devices. Regular software updates and cautious usage can help mitigate the risks associated with these infected devices.
