Famine Imminent in Gaza Strip as Food Insecurity Reaches Critical Levels
A new report from the leading authority on hunger has warned that famine is ‘imminent’ in northern Gaza, with the entire population of the Gaza Strip facing high levels of acute food insecurity.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification report has indicated that famine could spread to central and southern Gaza by July, leading to potential deaths among children due to lack of food and water. In response, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire to address the crisis.
Israeli authorities have come under fire for allegedly limiting aid to Gaza, exacerbating desperation and hunger among the population. The recent raid on Al-Shifa Hospital by Israeli forces has further fueled tensions between Israel and Hamas, with both sides trading blame for the dire situation in Gaza.
Food shortages in Gaza have led to a spike in malnourishment among young children, with areas of central and southern Gaza also at risk of famine in the coming months. To avert a full-blown famine, Gaza requires 300 trucks of food, water, and medicine daily.
The current situation has pushed Palestinians to resort to desperate measures to feed themselves and their families, with prices soaring for basic necessities like flour and baby formula. With the situation rapidly deteriorating, urgent action is needed to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
