Ford Recalls Over 238,000 Explorers for Rear Axle Mounting Bolt Issue
Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of 238,364 Explorers due to a potential problem with the rear axle mounting bolt. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that a fracture in the bolt can cause the driveshaft to disconnect, leading to a loss of drive power or a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied. The NHTSA warns that these scenarios can significantly increase the risk of a crash.
To address this issue, Ford will be replacing the subframe bushing and rear axle bolt, while also inspecting the rear axle cover for any damage and replacing it if necessary. The recall applies to model years 2020 through 2022.
According to Ford, repairs for this recall will be performed free of charge. Owners of affected vehicles can expect to receive notification letters in the mail starting on November 6, 2023.
Fortunately, no accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported. However, Ford is aware of 396 instances of rear axle bolt failures, with less than 5% resulting in a roll-in-park or loss of motive power condition.
In addition to the recall, Ford is currently facing an investigation by the NHTSA regarding faulty valves in several SUV models. Initially covering 25,000 vehicles, the probe has now expanded to include 708,000 vehicles and involves an engineering analysis. The investigation covers Ford Bronco, Edge, Explorer, F-150, Lincoln Aviator, and Nautilus vehicles from model years 2021 and 2022.
This is not the first recall by Ford this year. In August, the company recalled approximately 42,000 Super Duty F250 and F350 trucks due to a mechanical issue that heightened the risk of a crash.
Ford is highly committed to addressing these safety concerns promptly and efficiently, ensuring the well-being of its customers. Vehicle owners are encouraged to contact Ford or their local dealership to schedule the necessary repairs as soon as possible.
As always, it is crucial to stay updated on any recalls or investigations related to your vehicle for a safe driving experience.
