Dev Patel’s directorial debut film, Monkey Man, is going head-to-head with The First Omen at the domestic box office this weekend. Both films are facing tough competition and are performing lower than expected, with Monkey Man projected to gross $10.5 million and The First Omen projected at $8.3 million.
Despite their efforts, neither film has a strong chance of dethroning Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from the No. 1 spot at the box office. Monkey Man, which received a positive response at South-by-Southwest, has been receiving mixed reviews from regular audience members.
The film is inspired by the John Wick series and the legend of Hanuman, featuring Patel as an underground fighter seeking retribution for his mother’s death. On the other hand, The First Omen is a prequel to the 1976 film and stars Nell Tiger Free as a young woman questioning her faith and uncovering a conspiracy.
While Monkey Man is rolling out more slowly, The First Omen is opening in key markets overseas. Both films are eagerly awaiting updated box office numbers on Sunday to see how they will fare in the competitive market. Stay tuned for more updates on the performances of these two films as they continue to battle it out at the box office.
